About Poured Out Like Wine

A divorce, a father’s suicide and a pastor’s son surviving leukemia - these are the beginnings of a very young church and the ingredients of a creative journey of worship songwriters. “No one was writing songs that resonated with our journey, so by creative necessity we began to craft our own,” says Mike O’Brien, worship leader and co-producer on the project. "Life is too short to only play other people's inspiration; we’ve always wanted to say something that reflects our unique journey."

So over the course of 12 years Poured Out Like Wine recorded four full-length CDs and three EPs. More times than not their church services feature worship sets with 100% original material. These musicians have given what many would say are their best years to commit to the local church. They have forfeited opportunities to promote themselves in order to promote the Church and God Himself with these songs. Their focus is not to create glimmering, silky smooth pop tunes, but rather to create simple, singable and theologically-rich songs for the local church.

There are currently over 20 musicians involved in the Poured Out Like Wine community, each one bringing his or her own musical, theological and personal experience into the mix. The result is an eclectic musical style which the band describes as “Non-polished Americana Worship Camp Song Rock Pop,” seamlessly incorporating driving guitars and anthemic vocals with more "rootsy" accompaniment from hammer dulcimers, pedal steel guitars and the like.

Monument

Their first release through Vineyard Music, Monument, is a story-driven worship experience - the story not only of songs and songwriters, but of an entire church community seeking the heart of God. A far cry from the sterile confines of a recording studio, Monument places the listener directly in the center of a group of worshipers gathered at Vineyard Community Church in Marietta, GA. "Our stage is very small and about the worst place to do a recording," says O’Brien, "but we thought we just had to do it; we had nothing to lose."

"There were technical problems galore, but somehow the sound of the audience singing their heart out into the microphones overshadowed all the madness. People did not come to get a peek at the band, but to lift praise to God for all He had done."

That heart is felt throughout the album, from the anthemic opener, "You Are Lifted", all the way through to the introspective "To Your Cross", which describes the tension of living "between these two worlds" and longing for a resolution that only only comes as we rest in the arms of the Father.
